What is the pensionable age (ASDRe)?

The pensionable retirement age (ASDRe) is the age at which an EU official can retire without penalty. It depends on the date of entry into service: 60 years for staff recruited before 1 May 2004 who had completed 20 years of service before that date, and from 63 to 66 years according to a progressive scale for the others (Art. 22 Annex XIII).

What is the maximum pension percentage?

The pension is capped at 70% of the last basic salary (Art. 77 of the Staff Regulations), regardless of the number of years of service. This cap may be reached before the pensionable age depending on service periods and bonifications.

What is the penalty for early departure?

Departure before the pensionable age results in a reduction of 3.5% per year of anticipation (before 60 years old) and 1.75% per year (between 60 and the pensionable age), according to cases defined in Art. 9 §2 of Annex VIII. The penalty applies to the accumulated pension percentage.

Is there a bonification for deferred departure?

Yes, departing after the pensionable age entitles you to a bonification: 2.5% per additional year for pre-2014 regimes, and 1.5% per year for the post-2014 regime. The total pension remains capped at 70% (Art. 77 Staff Regulations).

What are the three EU pension regimes?

EU officials fall under three regimes depending on their first entry-into-service date: (1) pre-2004 regime (entry before 1 May 2004) — 2.0%/year accrual, pensionable age 60-65 years depending on seniority; (2) 2004-2013 regime — 1.9%/year accrual, pensionable age 63 years; (3) post-2014 regime — 1.8%/year accrual, pensionable age 66 years.
